Pantone Colour of the Year Ultra Violet Color Interior Design

Pantone introduces a shock of colour to wake up the senses and welcome in the New Year!

It’s that time of the year again; the sales are in full swing, New Year’s resolutions have been made (and promptly broken!) and you’re looking around your home, now bereft of cosy fairy lights and brightly-coloured baubles, wondering how to put the sparkle back into your interiors! To kick 2018 off with the burst of colour and inspiration you may be looking for, we’ve examined Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2018 and have a few ideas about how it can inject life back into your home this year!

Ultra Violet is Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2018; a vivid purple described by them as, “a dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, [it] communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.” This colour is bold and daring, perfect for people who want to stand out from the crowd, or follow in the footsteps of the King of Purple, Prince.

Historically, purple has been used by the aristocracy to reflect wealth and opulence, and it retains this luxurious status. As such, it is best used sparingly, and in accents, to really make your interiors pop! Of course, there are exceptions to every rule and, if you feel particularly audacious, you can go all-out with this colour to great effect. Just make sure to pair Ultra Violet with subtler shades, such as pale lavender, or dusty mauve, to ground your theme and avoid overwhelming your senses.

Ultra Violet is a blue-based purple so it is best used in rooms with lots of natural light, to avoid it feeling cold. You can warm it up still further by contrasting it with a muted mustard for a put-together look that oozes sophistication and grandeur. If, on the other hand, you love the shade but err on the side of caution, introduce it to your home gradually, in cushions and throws, or as an accent colour in a floral wallpaper.

Ultra Violet also makes the perfect colour for a small cloakroom or WC; you can afford to be bold here as it’s a room you won’t spend long in at one time so you won’t become overwhelmed or burnt out by the colour. As it is a small space, you can also splurge on an expensive wallpaper you wouldn’t choose elsewhere, because you won’t need as many rolls. It’s a brave choice but, when done well, it can give your home a real wow-factor. Alternatively, if your budget won’t stretch to a full room make-over, look out for toiletries and towels in bright purple and top the whole look off with a vase of fresh flowers.

Getting ready for Christmas with Miele

Miele Classic Christmas Cake

Bake this festive fruit cake in advance of Christmas and feed it regularly with rum, brandy or whisky to build the flavour and keep it moist. With this fabulous Miele recipe you can’t go wrong!


230g sultanas
230g raisins
170g currants
100g glace cherries, rinsed and quartered
100g dried apricots, quartered
50g mixed candied peel, finely chopped
6 tbsp brandy
250g plain flour
½ tsp mixed spice
½ tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp freshly grated nutmeg
50g flaked almonds, roughly chopped
1 orange, zest only
½ lemon, zest only
250g butter, softened
250g dark brown sugar
4 large eggs
2 tbsp black treacle
A deep 20cm round or 18cm square cake tin


1. Place all the fruits in a large bowl and pour over the brandy. Stir well and leave to soak for
several hours or overnight. Grease and double line the cake tin with greaseproof paper. Also, tie a
double band of brown paper round the outside of the tin.
2. Select the Conventional function and preheat the oven to 140ºC. Alternatively, use the Automatic
programme for Rich Fruit Cake and follow the instructions in the oven display.
3. Sieve the flour and spices into a large bowl and stir in the almonds, orange and lemon rind.
Cream the softened butter and dark brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time,
followed by the treacle.
4. Gradually fold in the flour, spices, almonds and citrus zests. Fold in the soaked fruit. Mix well to
combine and distribute the fruit throughout the mixture. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and
smooth off the surface with the back of a spoon. Cover the top of the cake loosely with a double
circle or square of greaseproof paper.
5. Place in the oven using the wire rack on shelf 2. Time the cake for 1 hour then reduce the oven
temperature to 120ºC and continue to bake for a further 3 hours or until the cake feels firm to the
touch and a skewer inserted in the centre come out clean.
6. Allow the cake to cool in the tin then remove when cold. If desired, the cake can be re-wrapped in
greaseproof paper and foil then stored in a cool dark place for up to 3 months, feeding at intervals
with more brandy or sherry. Decorate as desired just prior to Christmas.

As if that wasn’t enough, the delightful Carmela Hayes will be gracing our Nicholas Bell demonstration kitchen, whipping up an Italian feast with the Miele appliances. The Bell & Broil King BBQ Academy allows visitors the chance to cook a long with an expert chef in this interactive experience. The experience is completely free of charge, however spaces are limited so it is advisable to reserve your space in advance. Bookings of 2 will cook together on a workstation.
With four sessions each day you get expert tuition on how to make the most from your BBQ. Cooking using the latest Broil King BBQ technology, the classes are designed to take the most inexperienced beginners or the expert griller and offer them some great tips and advice on how to create the perfect gourmet feast. It’s free and great fun!

Spring Open Evening Party Night

On Wednesday 10th May 6-9pm, we will be opening our doors for yet another fantastic evening of fun, food and drinks. With guest chef, Carmela Sereno Hayes, cooking in the Nicholas Bell kitchen and BBQ demos galore we’re guaranteed to have some tasty samples for you to enjoy as you make your way around.

Northamptonshire local, Carmela, has been a firm favourite at our Open Evenings and cooking demos thanks to her spectacular Italian cuisine. She demonstrates that food can taste utterly delicious without being overly complex or time consuming.

Following the success of her first cookery book ‘Southern Italian Family Cooking’, she has gone on to write ‘A Passion for Pasta’ which is going to be released on May 2nd and which will be available to buy at the Open Evening.

Loads of local businesses will be showing off their goods in our pop-up stalls around the showroom. Look out for Posh Pork, Saxby’s Cider, the Beer Garage and many more!

Posh Pork sausages and joints from Farmer Lou are handmade from her own pigs; she knows exactly what’s gone into everything she produces and, as she sources her animal feed and ingredients locally, the carbon footprint is very low. She takes a very hands-on approach so that her animals are happy and have the highest living standards.

Saxby’s Cider is an award-winning family business that makes scrumptious, grown-up fruit cider. Another local treasure, they have an orchard over in Farndish filled to bursting with the best apple varieties for producing perfect ciders. Saxby’s don’t use any artificial flavourings, instead choosing a delicious balance of fruits to make an ideal summer drink.

The Beer Garage is new to our Open Evenings and their carefully selected craft beers and real ales are sure to be a hit. Their mission is to rid the UK of cheap, tasteless beer and they really know what they’re talking about; don’t miss this opportunity to have a chat with them and find your perfect beer. You won’t look back!

We will also be unveiling our exciting new bathroom displays and celebrating with plenty of cocktails and wine! Can’t stop, won’t stop. Bell wins interior design awards and makes plans for expansion!

2016 was a year of great successes for Bell and we want to take the opportunity to thank all of our customers, suppliers and colleagues for making this possible. As well as growing our business and planning for an exciting expansion in 2017, we were entered in (and won!) a number of prestigious business awards.

We were delighted to be nominated for two SME awards for Northamptonshire, coming runner-up in the CIPD Employer of the Year category and winning the Barclays Business of the Year for 2016! We were also the recipient of Muddy Stilettos’ Interiors Award for best Interiors Store of the year! For this we must say a huge thank you to our customers and the friends of Bell who voted for us and who recognise the improvements we have made in creating such a great store.

We are now shortlisted in two categories for KBBReview’s 2017 Retail and Design Awards for both the Kitchen Retailer of the Year and Kitchen Showroom of the Year. Our design teams have worked tirelessly throughout the past year producing some unbelievable kitchens and these nominations are richly deserved.

On top of the daily business of producing mind-blowing interior design, the team at Bell has been working behind the scenes to bring new, innovative products and services to the showroom this year. We are delighted to announce that we have a planning application in the pipelines to convert part of the building into a 130-seat Italian restaurant, complete with built-in pizza oven and outdoor seating area. We are working with spectacular local chef, Carmela Sereno Hayes, who is famed for her Italian cooking and especially her handmade pasta.

This conversion comes as part of a huge development which will see Bell add even more services to its repertoire, including a delicatessen and gifting section with soft furnishings and skincare products. The Rose Gallery and Luxe Cookshop are also planning to expand their offer into the extended space and we are excited to continue working with them going forward.

Our aim is to offer everything you need (and a few things you just want!) to create your dream home under one roof. We are not only expanding our premises but we are also fully refurbishing our bathroom department and bringing in state-of-the-art fires and stoves brands that align with our luxury position in the market.
